JASE CEO Talks to LinuxWorld.com on Linux and Virtualization

JASE Group CEO, Keith Parnell, was recently interviewed by LinuxWorld’s Jim Romeo at a CIO / CTO Roundtable.

CIO Reality Check: Linux and Virtualization
LinuxWorld.com

LinuxWorld.com: Do you think of virtualization as a “product” or a feature”?
KP: To our needs [hardware] virtualization is a product. Virtualization will become as much an OEM-produced product as single-partition hardware in days past. Considering virtualization as a feature from a small business standpoint rings of extra or excess costs against limited budgets.

LinuxWorld.com: How seriously are you looking at KVM and Hyper-V?
KP: Microsofts Hyper-V technology launch has been on our radar for quite a few months. Lower overall costs for hardware purchases, server maintenance and system management could open doors weve not been allowed to factor into our current budgeting.

We currently run side-by-side systems with almost identical hardware configurations to accommodate Windows-based web services and applications and separately Linux-based web services and applications. Hyper-V will bring scalability and expandability to the forefront within our small enterprise that before we were not able to afford.

LinuxWorld.com: Are you using virtualization to consolidate the same server images you have had in the past, or to add new capabilities?
KP: Our current plan is to implement Microsofts Hyper-V technology with our next cycle of replacement purchases. Consolidation efficiencies on the X64 platform will allow us explore the possibilities of expansive load balancing that we, as a small business, could not previously justify. Our software engineers will have the ability to take advantage of the virtualization platform, as will the systems administrators in that sharing of disks and resources will encourage not-before-seen efficiencies.

LinuxWorld.com: What applications and workloads do you plan to leave on their own physical hardware?
KP: We have custom-developed several processor and RAM intensive system applications that could possibly cause resource issues at the budget level we would invest in. For this reason these applications would require us to segregate them as independent from our virtualization platform. Thus providing the applications the affordable resources they require.

Dont misunderstand our assessment. We are not insinuating that the virtualization platform could not handle our requirements. We are making a decision that our budgets will not allow us to identify and analyze risk assessment tests with the possibility that our test platforms could not fully and efficiently perform. This is the decision-making environment of the small business CIO. R&D is not a commonly affordable luxury.

LinuxWorld.com: If an ISV supports a software product on Platform X, and you run virtual Platform X on Platform Y, do you still get the same level of support? Are any ISVs making you replicate bugs on physical hardware?
KP: Since we are not currently running hardware virtualization I can only speculate on the reactions to this type of issue from the software vendors. But I do have strong thoughts before venturing down that path.

When we purchase and install software that is guaranteed to function properly on a specified traditional platform, we expect the software to perform as warranted.

As hardware virtualization (such as Hyper-V) becomes more mainstream we also expect the software vendors to accommodate the changes in technology. I can foresee making spec purchases for software against Platform X running on Platform Y. Therefore the software vendors will be responsible for testing their products on the new warranted virtualization platform combinations.

LinuxWorld.com: What are the vendor and open source scenes pushing that you don’t want? What aren’t they pushing that you do want?
KP: Virtualization. Period. Virtualization can bring many great efficiencies to the small business. In my honest opinion, virtualization is not pushed enough. And until virtualization becomes mainstream we will not see these efficiencies produce themselves as major budget influencers. Virtualization technologies, both Microsofts Hyper-V and Suns KVM, should be on the tip of every conversation around scalable network architecture and deployments.

Others participating at the roundtable were: Clyde Williams, Infrastructure Systems Manager for Southeast Alabama Medical Center a hospital located in Dothan, Alabama; Walt Cornelison, Director of Information Technology for Tropitone Furniture a manufacturer or high-end outdoor furniture located in Irvine, California; Jason Ford, CTO of BlackMesh Hosting and Solution a managed hosting and managed services firm located in Herndon, Virginia.

JASE CEO Talks Maintaining the Brand in Baseball

JASE Group CEO, Keith Parnell, speaks out on his blog about a surprising source of maintaining the company brand.

While catching up on some work items this afternoon I have tuned in to an Atlanta Braves game streaming through MLB.tv. Very convenient, very nice service by the way.

But my quick comment for this blog entry is about branding. Many guys that wear sports-type sunglasses with baseball hats throw the glasses on the brim of the hat when they’re not in use.

One of the players was spotlighted by the commentators for placing his glasses on the back of his baseball hat. Again, very common but in this case it was a requirement by the Braves manager, Bobby Cox. Bobby doesn’t want in anyway the Braves logo on the front of the hat covered or blocked from view.

Who would have guessed that a baseball manager could be such a brand police? I like it.

Microblogging Debate Gone Wild

The folks at AdRANTs have gone on a rampage against the new Twitter vs. FriendFeed popularity fight.

The article includes some name-calling, a bit of bad (emotional) language, maybe a few assumptions that are wrong, and a bit of online ad jealousy. BUT, it’s funny how much of what they say is true.

No one outside the insular geekfest gives a shit or ever will give a shit about Twitter or FriendFeed or which is better than the other. Or why they absolutely MUST use them. Apparently, the geek squad are an incestuous bunch and simply CAN NOT live without their shiny new toys. And that’s OK. That’s they we are. But they are a minority and always will be.

The geek community has gone mad with the new, shiny widgets and tools sometimes forgetting there must be a goal in mind when determining time-and-motion expenditures everyday. If you use Twitter as a true networking tool, good choice. If you use Twitter to become popular and feed your ego, umm, probably not a good choice. But quite honestly, JZ is better than both of them for ease-of-use and for networking.

Read more of the article here. You’ll enjoy it.

ICANN’s Expansion in gTLDs Approved

ICANNThis is a reprint from the official ICANN website. Exciting announcement for the marketing and branding community!

Biggest Expansion in gTLDs Approved for Implementation
26 June 2008

Paris, France: The Board of ICANN today approved a recommendation that could see a whole range of new names introduced to the Internet’s addressing system.

“The Board today accepted a recommendation from its global stakeholders that it is possible to implement many new names to the Internet, paving the way for an expansion of domain name choice and opportunity” said Dr Paul Twomey, President and CEO of ICANN.

A final version of the implementation plan must be approved by the ICANN Board before the new process is launched. It is intended that the final version will be published in early 2009.

“The potential here is huge. It represents a whole new way for people to express themselves on the Net,” said Dr Twomey. “It’s a massive increase in the ‘real estate’ of the Internet.”

Presently, users have a limited range of 21 top level domains to choose from names that we are all familiar with like .com, .org, .info.

This proposal allows applicants for new names to self-select their domain name so that choices are most appropriate for their customers or potentially the most marketable. It is expected that applicants will apply for targeted community strings such as (the existing) .travel for the travel industry and .cat for the Catalan community (as well as generic strings like .brandname or .yournamehere). There are already interested consortiums wanting to establish city-based top level domain, like .nyc (for New York City), .berlin and .paris.

“One of the most exciting prospect before us is that the expanding system is also being planned to support extensions in the languages of the world,” said Peter Dengate Thrush, ICANN’s Chairman. “This is going to be very important for the future of the Internet in Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Russia.” The present system only supports 37 Roman characters.

Upon approval of the implementation plan, it is planned that applications for new names will be available in the second quarter of 2009.

Frequently asked questions on the process

1. Are you selling these new names?

ICANN is not “selling” new top level domain names. There will be a limited application period where any established entity from anywhere in the world can submit an application that will go through an evaluation process. It is anticipated that there will be additional rounds relatively soon after the close of the first application round.

2. What’s to stop others registering my brand name?

Trademarks will not be automatically reserved. But there will be an objection-based mechanism for trademark owners where their arguments for protection will be considered.

3. How did this proposal get developed?

ICANN has a multi-stakeholder policy development process that served as the foundation for the process design. It involved consultation with domain name industry, trade mark attorneys, the business sector, users, governments and technicians.

4. How will offensive names be prevented?

Offensive names will be subject to an objection-based process based on public morality and order. This process will be conducted by an international arbitration body utilizing criteria drawing on provisions in a number of international treaties. ICANN will not be the decision maker on these objections.

5. When will all this happen?

ICANN is working towards accepting the first applications in the second quarter of 2009.

About ICANN:

ICANN is responsible for the global coordination of the Internet’s system of unique identifiers like domain names (like .org, .museum and country codes like .uk) and the addresses used in a variety of Internet protocols that help computers reach each other over the Internet. Careful management of these resources is vital to the Internet’s operation, so ICANN’s global stakeholders meet regularly to develop policies that ensure the Internet’s ongoing security and stability. ICANN is an internationally organized, public benefit non-profit company. For more information please visit: www.icann.org.

The Difference Between Advertising and Marketing

From Rick Cockrum of Shards of Consciousness fame –

Learn the difference between advertising and marketing. Use them both.

Marketing is the sum of the activities you perform to get the word out about your business and attract the customers you want.

Advertising is one marketing activity. It usually entails publishing paid announcements about your business.

At our theatre we advertise in the local paper weekly. Our marketing consists of a website, word of mouth from our customers (our best marketing), involvement in local activities, public service functions, involvement with local business groups, talking about the theatre in the course of day to day conversations, signage.

You can see that advertising, while important, is only a small part of marketing.

Helpful Tips for Developers on Fighting SQL Injection

SQLServerCentral.comMichael Coles wrote a nice little tips article for SQLServerCentral.com on doing your best to fight SQL Injection.

As a developer you probably already have many little tricks in your toolbag to fight these pesking predators. It certainly doesn’t hurt to see another coder’s ideas.

Here’s a quick exerpt -

For many years now, SQL Injection attacks on large corporate websites have been highly publicized. Several articles around the Web have described what an injection attack is, how it works, and the basics of how to defend against it. A couple of very good articles here at SQL Server Central also delve into this topic (SQL Injection by Christoffer Hedgate and SQL Injection – Part 1 by Randy Dyess). So why did I feel the need to write another article on SQL Injection? For three reasons:

1. The good work by Mr. Dyess and Mr. Hedgate offer code samples and examples for ASP. I felt that a sample pertaining to ASP.NET, for those without the ASP background, was in order.
2. These two authors focus on using parameterized queries; and in the case of Mr. Hedgate, validating user input. Excellent advice all around, but I feel there are other lines of defense which should be addressed as well.
3. Finally, no matter how many SQL Injection articles are posted around the Web, DBA’s and developers continue to post highly exploitable code samples to newsgroups and discussion boards.
In this article, I hope to build upon the good work of Mr. Hedgate and Mr. Dyess, and provide updated samples as well as a more complete defensive strategy for dealing with SQL Injection.

Get Michael’s full Update SQL Injection article here.
