Technology Thoughts from the JASElabs

JASE CEO Talks to LinuxWorld.com on Linux and Virtualization

JASE Group CEO, Keith Parnell, was recently interviewed by LinuxWorld’s Jim Romeo at a CIO / CTO Roundtable.

CIO Reality Check: Linux and Virtualization
LinuxWorld.com

LinuxWorld.com: Do you think of virtualization as a “product” or a feature”?
KP: To our needs [hardware] virtualization is a product. Virtualization will become as much an OEM-produced product as single-partition hardware in days past. Considering virtualization as a feature from a small business standpoint rings of extra or excess costs against limited budgets.

LinuxWorld.com: How seriously are you looking at KVM and Hyper-V?
KP: Microsofts Hyper-V technology launch has been on our radar for quite a few months. Lower overall costs for hardware purchases, server maintenance and system management could open doors weve not been allowed to factor into our current budgeting.

We currently run side-by-side systems with almost identical hardware configurations to accommodate Windows-based web services and applications and separately Linux-based web services and applications. Hyper-V will bring scalability and expandability to the forefront within our small enterprise that before we were not able to afford.

LinuxWorld.com: Are you using virtualization to consolidate the same server images you have had in the past, or to add new capabilities?
KP: Our current plan is to implement Microsofts Hyper-V technology with our next cycle of replacement purchases. Consolidation efficiencies on the X64 platform will allow us explore the possibilities of expansive load balancing that we, as a small business, could not previously justify. Our software engineers will have the ability to take advantage of the virtualization platform, as will the systems administrators in that sharing of disks and resources will encourage not-before-seen efficiencies.

LinuxWorld.com: What applications and workloads do you plan to leave on their own physical hardware?
KP: We have custom-developed several processor and RAM intensive system applications that could possibly cause resource issues at the budget level we would invest in. For this reason these applications would require us to segregate them as independent from our virtualization platform. Thus providing the applications the affordable resources they require.

Dont misunderstand our assessment. We are not insinuating that the virtualization platform could not handle our requirements. We are making a decision that our budgets will not allow us to identify and analyze risk assessment tests with the possibility that our test platforms could not fully and efficiently perform. This is the decision-making environment of the small business CIO. R&D is not a commonly affordable luxury.

LinuxWorld.com: If an ISV supports a software product on Platform X, and you run virtual Platform X on Platform Y, do you still get the same level of support? Are any ISVs making you replicate bugs on physical hardware?
KP: Since we are not currently running hardware virtualization I can only speculate on the reactions to this type of issue from the software vendors. But I do have strong thoughts before venturing down that path.

When we purchase and install software that is guaranteed to function properly on a specified traditional platform, we expect the software to perform as warranted.

As hardware virtualization (such as Hyper-V) becomes more mainstream we also expect the software vendors to accommodate the changes in technology. I can foresee making spec purchases for software against Platform X running on Platform Y. Therefore the software vendors will be responsible for testing their products on the new warranted virtualization platform combinations.

LinuxWorld.com: What are the vendor and open source scenes pushing that you don’t want? What aren’t they pushing that you do want?
KP: Virtualization. Period. Virtualization can bring many great efficiencies to the small business. In my honest opinion, virtualization is not pushed enough. And until virtualization becomes mainstream we will not see these efficiencies produce themselves as major budget influencers. Virtualization technologies, both Microsofts Hyper-V and Suns KVM, should be on the tip of every conversation around scalable network architecture and deployments.

Others participating at the roundtable were: Clyde Williams, Infrastructure Systems Manager for Southeast Alabama Medical Center a hospital located in Dothan, Alabama; Walt Cornelison, Director of Information Technology for Tropitone Furniture a manufacturer or high-end outdoor furniture located in Irvine, California; Jason Ford, CTO of BlackMesh Hosting and Solution a managed hosting and managed services firm located in Herndon, Virginia.

Microblogging Debate Gone Wild

The folks at AdRANTs have gone on a rampage against the new Twitter vs. FriendFeed popularity fight.

The article includes some name-calling, a bit of bad (emotional) language, maybe a few assumptions that are wrong, and a bit of online ad jealousy. BUT, it’s funny how much of what they say is true.

No one outside the insular geekfest gives a shit or ever will give a shit about Twitter or FriendFeed or which is better than the other. Or why they absolutely MUST use them. Apparently, the geek squad are an incestuous bunch and simply CAN NOT live without their shiny new toys. And that’s OK. That’s they we are. But they are a minority and always will be.

The geek community has gone mad with the new, shiny widgets and tools sometimes forgetting there must be a goal in mind when determining time-and-motion expenditures everyday. If you use Twitter as a true networking tool, good choice. If you use Twitter to become popular and feed your ego, umm, probably not a good choice. But quite honestly, JZ is better than both of them for ease-of-use and for networking.

Read more of the article here. You’ll enjoy it.

ICANN’s Expansion in gTLDs Approved

ICANNThis is a reprint from the official ICANN website. Exciting announcement for the marketing and branding community!

Biggest Expansion in gTLDs Approved for Implementation
26 June 2008

Paris, France: The Board of ICANN today approved a recommendation that could see a whole range of new names introduced to the Internet’s addressing system.

“The Board today accepted a recommendation from its global stakeholders that it is possible to implement many new names to the Internet, paving the way for an expansion of domain name choice and opportunity” said Dr Paul Twomey, President and CEO of ICANN.

A final version of the implementation plan must be approved by the ICANN Board before the new process is launched. It is intended that the final version will be published in early 2009.

“The potential here is huge. It represents a whole new way for people to express themselves on the Net,” said Dr Twomey. “It’s a massive increase in the ‘real estate’ of the Internet.”

Presently, users have a limited range of 21 top level domains to choose from names that we are all familiar with like .com, .org, .info.

This proposal allows applicants for new names to self-select their domain name so that choices are most appropriate for their customers or potentially the most marketable. It is expected that applicants will apply for targeted community strings such as (the existing) .travel for the travel industry and .cat for the Catalan community (as well as generic strings like .brandname or .yournamehere). There are already interested consortiums wanting to establish city-based top level domain, like .nyc (for New York City), .berlin and .paris.

“One of the most exciting prospect before us is that the expanding system is also being planned to support extensions in the languages of the world,” said Peter Dengate Thrush, ICANN’s Chairman. “This is going to be very important for the future of the Internet in Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Russia.” The present system only supports 37 Roman characters.

Upon approval of the implementation plan, it is planned that applications for new names will be available in the second quarter of 2009.

Frequently asked questions on the process

1. Are you selling these new names?

ICANN is not “selling” new top level domain names. There will be a limited application period where any established entity from anywhere in the world can submit an application that will go through an evaluation process. It is anticipated that there will be additional rounds relatively soon after the close of the first application round.

2. What’s to stop others registering my brand name?

Trademarks will not be automatically reserved. But there will be an objection-based mechanism for trademark owners where their arguments for protection will be considered.

3. How did this proposal get developed?

ICANN has a multi-stakeholder policy development process that served as the foundation for the process design. It involved consultation with domain name industry, trade mark attorneys, the business sector, users, governments and technicians.

4. How will offensive names be prevented?

Offensive names will be subject to an objection-based process based on public morality and order. This process will be conducted by an international arbitration body utilizing criteria drawing on provisions in a number of international treaties. ICANN will not be the decision maker on these objections.

5. When will all this happen?

ICANN is working towards accepting the first applications in the second quarter of 2009.

About ICANN:

ICANN is responsible for the global coordination of the Internet’s system of unique identifiers like domain names (like .org, .museum and country codes like .uk) and the addresses used in a variety of Internet protocols that help computers reach each other over the Internet. Careful management of these resources is vital to the Internet’s operation, so ICANN’s global stakeholders meet regularly to develop policies that ensure the Internet’s ongoing security and stability. ICANN is an internationally organized, public benefit non-profit company. For more information please visit: www.icann.org.

iPods and Other Gadgets a Source of Computer Viruses

Computer VirusCNN.com is reporting an AP story of confirmed cases of computer gadgets being purchased from manufacturers and retailers pre-installed with multiple electronic viruses.

Apple has confirmed many video iPods were delivered to your homes with viruses as serious as providing hackers a way to steal passwords from your computer; including your bank account login information stored in your web browsers’ configurations.

Best Buy has pulled many gadgets including electronic photo frames from their shelves blaming their partner manufacturers for the virus issues.

Sam’s Club and Target are performing internal investigations to attempt to validate complaints against their products.

The AP said they’ve contacted some of the world’s largest electronics manufacturers to interview them on protecting their processes from virus insertions but all have declined comment or did not respond. Among them are Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., which is based in Taiwan and has an iPod factory in China; Singapore-based Flextronics International Ltd.; and Taiwan-based Quanta Computer Inc. and Asustek Computer Inc.

The bottom line for each of us as consumers is to be prepared. Be prepared for the worst and protect yourselves and your computers. If you have not already, purchase an anti-virus software application from one of the major manufacturers such as Symantec or McAfee. And be diligent about keeping the anti-virus definitions up-to-date.

If you’re prepared, are smart about your Internet surfing and have taken the proper security steps to protect your computer system(s), you can sleep soundly 95% of the night. Let us worry the other 5% for you.

A Connected World and how important is it?

JASE Podcast #7 (3:50 minutes): A Connected World and how important is it?

Keith Parnell put up a post on his blog this week talking about varying, vital departments of organizations being connected via smartphones. Interesting. We’ll reprint it here.

Various SmartphonesCIO.com recently stood up an interesting survey – BlackBerry Users Vote: How Tethered Are You?

I think a more important question for company decision-makers would be, How Tethered Should My Team Be?

My world is very interesting and overall I think unique. Not unique for the tech industry but unique as compared to the work force as a whole. I require myself to be electronically connected at almost all hours of every night and day. Much to Nicole’s chagrin, yes, ‘every’ night and day. My tech team is nearly the same and during their disconnected times there should be another connected person capable of filling the needs of the organization.

Let’s move to other member (sets) of the organization’s team. Should the Operations team be consistently connected? Should the Creative team be consistently connected? Should the Sales team be consistently connected? Should the Marketing team be consistently connected? (I’ll stop there but there are other teams just a critical such as HR, Finance / Accounting, etc.) Within each of these teams an evaluation of senior management, team leads and team members should also be weighed. Should they, or at least their role, be consistently connected?

Here’s my answer – YES! Yes, they absolutely sure should. Each of these teams occupies a vital role in the decision-making processes that are important to the organization’s success. A senior member of each of these teams should be always available, reachable and able to communicate at any given time as dictated by the real-time needs of the organization.

So how do we make this connected state happen? Smartphones. Smartphones that are reliable, (platform) stable, secure, usable, functional and yes, okay attractive. Smartphones that put email, SMS, MMS, Internet access, IM and phone calls at your fingertips. RIM’s BlackBerry tops the list of recommendations from leaders of most top organization around the globe including myself. Nokia (the N95) makes fine smartphone products as does Palm (the Treo series) and HP (the iPAQ series).

CIO.com’s Survey Results for “How Addicted to Your SmartPhone Are You?
5% – My phone is for business. I put it away at night, unless I’m traveling for work.
2% – I check messages every few hours after work and on weekends. But I’d never bring my smartphone on vacation.
19% – I’m more productive because of my smartphone, and it doesn’t negatively affect my work/life balance. I wouldn’t call it an addiction.
67% – My smartphone never leaves my side. At work, rest, play, vacation, you name itmy best electronic friend is with me.
7% – IMHO That’s NOYB. BB4N. EOM. (In my humble opinion, that’s none of your business. Bye bye for now. End of message.)

Where do you stand? Do you make yourself available to be a vital piece of your organization?

(Lack of) Security Strikes Apple Again

PayPal says to steer clear of Apple’s Safari web browser if you plan to use their services. Seems that Apple has found security to not be important again to its faithful followers. This is nothing new from Apple so it shouldn’t be a surprise.

“Apple, unfortunately, is lagging behind what they need to do, to protect their customers,” Michael Barrett, PayPal’s Chief Information Security Officer said in an interview. “Our recommendation at this point, to our customers, is use Internet Explorer 7 or 8 when it comes out, or Firefox 2 or Firefox 3, or indeed Opera.”

Opera, IE, and Firefox are “safer, precisely because we think they are safer for the average consumer,” he added. “I’d love to say that Safari was a safer browser, but at this point it isn’t.”

JASEbid Beta – Coming Soon

COMING SOON – COMING SOON – COMING SOON – COMING SOON – COMING SOON

JASEbid - Buy and sell electronics, cars, clothing, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods, digital cameras, and everything else on JASEbid, the world's online marketplace. How to Get Started on JASEbid

Are you interested in using JASEbid to buy the products that you need or even sell items that you no longer want? If you are, you will need to create a JASEbid account, if you haven’t already done so. Although many automatically assume that getting started with JASEbid is a complicated task, it doesn’t have to be. All you really need to do is follow a few simple steps and you should be good to go.

The first thing that you will want to do is visit JASEbid’s website, which is located at JASEbid.com. Once you are at JASEbid’s website, you can then click on the link that allows you to register a new account. At that stage, you will be brought to a signup form. That signup form will ask you a series of questions. For instance, you will need to enter in your full name, your address, your telephone number, as well as an e-mail address. You will also be required to come up with a JASEbid screen name or sign in name, as well as a JASEbid password, which will be used to access your JASEbid account. Once you have correctly filled out the form, you will be sent a verification email from JASEbid.

Once you have received JASEbid’s verification email and followed all of the instructions, which will help you validate your JASEbid account, you will be able to start using JASEbid right away. When you first get started, you may need to sign in to your JASEbid account. As previously stated, you will need to use your JASEbid sign in name or screen name and password to do so. For that reason, you may want to write down your sign in information and keep it in a safe place. Once you have signed in to your JASEbid account, you can then do whatever you want; buy or sell.

If you are interested in using JASEbid to shop online, to buy, you will want to start searching for items to buy. This can be done a number of different ways. JASEbid allows you to browse through their large selection of items, by detailed categories. You can also perform a standard JASEbid search or an advanced one. Searches are more likely to give you accurate, tailored results. When browsing or searching for something in particular, you should be able to see a large number of auction listing all on one page. The information that you will be presented with at this time is the standard, bare minimum. If you would like more information on the item in question, such as how much shipping costs or too see additional pictures, you will want to click on the link to view the detailed sales page. Should you like what you see, follow the instructions to buy and you will have made your first purchase on JASEbid!

As it was previously stated, if you are interested in selling on JASEbid, to make a little bit of extra money, you can also do so. The only difference is that you are required to pay small fees to become a JASEbid seller, unlike JASEbid buyers who have completely free accounts. The amount of money that you are charged will all depend on your auctions, particularly how much you list each item for, as well as how well each item sells. To get started with selling, you will want to click on the sell link at the top of the JASEbid webpage. What is nice about listing items for sale on JASEbid it is relatively easy to do. For instance, you need to choose a category for your item, make a headline for your auction listing, write a description of your product, upload pictures of what you are selling, outline shipping costs, as well as accepted forms of payments, but everything is outlined for you, in a step-by-step matter.

Whether you are interested in becoming a JASEbid buyer or a JASEbid seller, you can do both, in as little as a few minutes. JASEbid, as previously mentioned, is considered one the most shopped at online marketplaces. For you, this means that if you are looking to make money on JASEbid, you should be able to do so and if you are interested in buying on JASEbid, you should be able to find millions of products to choose from.

Getting Started with Silverlight

Microsoft SilverlightWe ran across this article by Dan Wahlin this morning that lays out a nice description of the basics of Silverlight. Worth a read.

What Is Silverlight 1.0?
A lot of people like to compare Silverlight to Adobe’s Flash product. Silverlight is a plug-in, like Flash, that must be installed on an end user’s computer in order to work and can be used in multiple browsers including Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari. Silverlight also works on multiple operating systems, including Windows and Macintosh (a Linux version called Moonlight is also being developed outside of Microsoft). Once installed, Silverlight can be used to provide eye-catching animations, display movies, show ads, provide navigation and play games or music.

Silverlight is based on an XML format called Extensible Application Markup Language, normally referred to as XAML. XAML provides specialized XML tags that can be used to perform a variety of tasks, such as displaying ellipses, rectangles and lines, handling various media formats (.MP3, .WMV, .JPG, etc.), animating objects to create compelling visual effects, transforming objects, interacting with JavaScript and more.
